IAPMO Receives ASPE Research Foundation Award of Distinction

The International Association of Plumbing and Mechanical Officials (IAPMO®) was honored to receive the American Society of Plumbing Engineers’ (ASPE) Research Foundation Award of Distinction during the organization’s 2012 Convention and Exposition in Charlotte, N.C.

ASPE Past President and ASPE Research Foundation Chairman Julius Ballanco, PE, CPD, FASPE, presented the award to IAPMO Group CEO GP Russ Chaney on Oct. 28 after Chaney delivered his presentation at the organization’s biennial conference.

The IAPMO Group received the award for its “long-term support to the growth and prosperity of the ASPE Research Foundation,” ASPE said in a statement announcing the award.

In 2010, IAPMO and ASPE signed a Memorandum of Understanding for the organizations to collaborate on a number of projects. Among those projects is the testing of roof drains to determine flow characteristics that can be used to underpin the development of a new standard for roof drain system sizing, and the IAPMO R&T Laboratory in Ontario, Calif., performed the testing earlier this year. “The results of the study already have drastically changed the way roof drain systems are designed and how codes pertaining to roof drainage systems are written,” the ASPE statement said.

“The IAPMO R&T Labs demonstrated their excellence in research for the plumbing engineering profession,” the statement continued. “Their insight and assistance provided the ASPE Research Foundation with test results that will impact the profession for many years to come. In addition to helping ASPE Research Foundation, IAPMO also provides a service to the industry on a worldwide basis.”

Ballanco pointed out that the award is not given out every two years; rather, it is presented when the ASPE Research Foundation Board of Directors believes there is an individual, chapter or organization that is deserving of being recognized for efforts in providing research support for plumbing engineering.

“IAPMO worked hand in hand with the ASPE Research Foundation to complete testing on roof drains,” Ballanco said. “The award serves as recognition of the efforts put forth by IAPMO, the dedication to building a very accurate testing rig, and the support by the IAPMO staff.”

Founded in Los Angeles in 1926, IAPMO has grown to be recognized the world over for its Uniform Codes. With offices in 12 U.S. states and 13 countries, IAPMO has assisted with code development all over the world, and provisions from its Uniform Plumbing Code® protect more than half the world’s population.
