Revised ASSE Standard for Atmospheric Type Vacuum Breakers Now Available

ASSE 1001-2017, Performance Requirements for Atmospheric Type Vacuum Breakers, has been designated as an American National Standard by the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) and is now available for purchase.

ASSE 1001 provides performance standards and compliance testing procedures for atmospheric type vacuum breakers that are single pipe-applied, flushometer-applied, or integrally-applied. Atmospheric type vacuum breakers provide protection of the potable water supply against pollutants or contaminants that enter the water system due to backsiphonage through the outlet. This standard does not apply to water closet tank ballcocks or similar devices that depend on float-operated valves to control flow.

“This 2017 revision adds performance criteria specific to vacuum breakers intended for flushometer applications, and for those intended to be integral to other plumbing devices,” said Vacuum Breaker Working Group Chairperson William Chapin. “In these cases, flushometers and integral-type devices now have clear design and test standards associated with their functions. We are very fortunate to have a group of individuals who are willing to donate their time and expertise to ASSE International.”

ASSE 1001 performance requirements include compliance testing for temperature and pressure ranges, pressure losses, air inlets, air flows, backsiphonage, and detailed requirements for materials, markings, pipe threads, and manufacturers’ instructions.
