IAPMO R&T Celebrates Anniversary of First WaterSense® Showerhead Certification

One year has passed since IAPMO R&T completed the first WaterSense® consumer product-labeling program certification of a high-efficiency showerhead in North America — and the program has been going full speed ahead every day since.

It was only three weeks after the US EPA began accepting high-efficiency showerheads into the WaterSense program in early March 2010 that IAPMO R&T turned around manufacturer Moen Incorporated’s application within 24 hours of its submittal. The qualifying lines of showerheads met the strict WaterSense standards restricting water usage to no more than 2.0 gallons per minute (gpm), tested at a flowing pressure of 80 pounds per square inch (psi), as well as the performance requirements for spray force and coverage. This fast turnaround enabled Moen to quickly bring to market showerheads bearing the WaterSense consumer label.

North America’s premier plumbing and mechanical product certification agency has been a licensed provider of WaterSense® certification since 2007, certifying the first lavatory faucet to the standard in December of that year. To date, IAPMO R&T has certified thousands of lavatory faucet, toilet, urinal and showerhead models to the WaterSense specifications. Products bearing the WaterSense label must not only save water, but also perform as well or better than conventional models on the market.

“No third party certification body has been certifying WaterSense showerheads as long as IAPMO R&T,” said Anish Desai, director of Certification for IAPMO R&T. “When speed to market is crucial, there is no substitute for experience at doing the job fast and doing it right.”

Manufacturers wishing to have their showerheads identified as meeting the WaterSense criteria must have them certified as such by a qualified third-party certification body such as IAPMO R&T, which is accredited by the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) as a provider of certification services to WaterSense specifications.

IAPMO R&T certifies and lists plumbing, mechanical, electrical and solar products according to established US and Canadian codes and standards, ensuring continuous compliance to such documents. IAPMO R&T is part of The IAPMO Group’s family of companies.
