ASSE Standard 1056-2013 is Now Available

Performance Requirements for Spill Resistant Vacuum Breaker Assemblies

ASSE Standard 1056-2013, Performance Requirements for Spill Resistant Vacuum Breaker Assemblies, has been approved by the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) and is now available for purchase. ASSE 1056-2013, a revision of 1056-2001, is the second product performance standard to be approved by ANSI and published by ASSE International in the past three weeks.

“ASSE International has recognized the need to protect against backflow and backsiphonage conditions since the very beginning of our Product Standards Program,” said Product Standards Committee Chairman Edward J. Lyczko. “Continuing our concentration on backflow prevention, the revised ASSE 1056 standard addresses assemblies that are installed in water supply lines to prevent the backflow of nonpotable water into the potable water supply. These assemblies are similar to ASSE 1020 pressure vacuum breakers, but include a unique design that prevents damaging water spillage from the vent.”

Originally developed in 1993, ASSE Standard 1056 addresses the indoor application of assemblies installed in systems under continuous pressure conditions and designed to protect against backsiphonage. ASSE 1056’s predecessor, ASSE Standard 1020 for pressure vacuum breaker assemblies, contains a requirement that may cause water to discharge from its normal operating position, making ASSE 1020 assemblies undesirable for indoor applications where water discharge could cause damage.

ASSE 1056 assemblies provide the same vacuum breaker capabilities as ASSE 1020, but solve the problem of water discharging from a pressurized assembly. When properly installed, ASSE 1056 assemblies are suitable for high-hazard backsiphonage protection.
