ASSE/IAPMO/ANSI Series 7000-2013 Receives ANSI Approval

Professional Qualifications Standard for Residential Potable Water Fire Protection System Installers and Inspectors for One and Two Family Dwellings

ASSE/IAPMO/ANSI Series 7000-2013, Professional Qualifications Standard for Residential Potable Water Fire Protection System Installers and Inspectors for One and Two Family Dwellings, has been approved by the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) and is now available for purchase.

ASSE Series 7000, for plumbing-based residential fire protection systems, was introduced in 2006, meeting the demand for qualified installers and inspectors of residential fire suppression systems in compliance with the National Fire Protection Association’s NFPA 13D: Standard for the Installation of Sprinkler Systems in One- and Two-Family Dwellings and Manufactured Homes. This 2013 revision of the Series 7000 replaces the term plumbing-based with potable water, retitling the standard as Professional Qualifications Standard for Residential Potable Water Fire Protection System Installers and Inspectors for One and Two Family Dwellings.

“The ASSE/IAPMO/ANSI Series 7000 was revised in order to meet the demands of the new NFPA 13D-2013 and the needs of the industry,” said Executive Director Scott Hamilton, chair of the Series 7000 working group. “Residential fires continue to be a deadly problem, but with the installation of residential fire sprinkler systems and working smoke alarms, the number of residential fire deaths could easily be cut by 80 percent. The cost of a residential fire sprinkler system is minimal when compared to the cost of a lost loved one.”

Annually, more people die in their homes due to fires than all other natural disasters combined; a residential fire protection system, installed and inspected by qualified professionals, is a significant solution to this problem. ASSE/IAPMO/ANSI Series 7000-2013 applies to installers and inspectors who provide layout, detail and calculations for residential potable water fire protection systems for one- and two-family dwellings. This standard series contains the uniform minimum requirements, identified by industry consensus, for installers and inspectors of such residential systems.

Because some model plumbing codes adopted throughout the United States limited the use of the ASSE/IAPMO/ANSI Series 7000-2006, the working group of this standard expanded the document’s scope in order to meet the industry’s needs. With these new revisions, the current Series 7000 meets the intent of those codes in question.
