The American National Standards Institute (ANSI) announced today it has granted accreditation to IAPMO R&T’s U.S. EPA WaterSense third-party certification program, the first certification agency to earn the designation.
ANSI accreditation adds value to the certification process, ensuring that certification bodies demonstrate compliance with the WaterSense product certification system and are capable and competent to carry out their responsibilities.
Launched in June 2006, the WaterSense program offers consumers a simple way to make product-purchasing choices that conserve water — with no sacrifice to quality or performance. Certified WaterSense products save consumers money through decreased water usage. Products bearing the WaterSense mark are certified more water-efficient than products that don’t meet WaterSense standards.
Last month, ANSI became the first accreditation body approved to perform accreditation services under the WaterSense program and subsequently launched a pilot accreditation program for EPA-licensed certification bodies. The IAPMO Group joined as partners in the U.S. EPA WaterSense program in December 2007 and IAPMO R&T independently certified the first manufacturer to the new standard on Dec. 18 of the same year.
Using water more efficiently will conserve supplies for future generations. According to U.S. EPA estimates, at least 36 states are projecting water shortages by 2013. Each American uses an average of 100 gallons of water per day at home, but by making simple changes can easily reduce that figure by 30 percent. WaterSense certification and labeling makes it easier for consumers to identify the products that will help them accomplish this.
