1101.5 Expansion Joints Required. Expansion joints or sleeves shall be provided where warranted by temperature variations or physical conditions.
Expansion joints or sleeves must be installed to protect the storm water piping from expansion, contraction, and building movement (see Figure 1101.5). A typical location for the installation of an expansion joint is the connection between a roof drain body attached to a plywood decked roof and a vertical conductor. Movement of the wood roof and expansion of the piping would otherwise either damage the piping or damage the water-tight joint between the roof and the roof or overflow drain. Expansion joints are also frequently needed to compensate for expansion and contraction of conductors located in attic spaces that are subject to widely fluctuating temperatures during different times of the day.
