The Las Cruces, N.M., City Council has voted unanimously to adopt the 2009 editions of IAPMO’s complete collection of Uniform Codes — the Uniform Plumbing Code® (UPC), Uniform Mechanical Code® (UMC), Uniform Solar Energy Code® (USEC) and Uniform Swimming Pool, Spa and Hot Tub Code® (USPSHTC). Sharing its southern border with the nation of Mexico, the “City of the Crosses” is New Mexico’s second most populous city.
Developed by the International Association of Plumbing and Mechanical Officials (IAPMO®) using ANSI-accredited three-year consensus code development processes, the Uniform Codes govern the installation and inspection of plumbing, mechanical, solar and swimming pool/spa systems as a means of promoting the public’s health, safety and welfare.
IAPMO Region 8 Manager John Mata was in attendance for support at the Oct. 1 meeting during which the city council voted to adopt the Uniform Codes. Mata worked with Las Cruces Building & Development Services Administrator Robert Kyle, New Mexico Construction Industry Division Bureau Chief JT Baca, Supervisor Jesus Carrasco and UA Local 412 Business Agent Jerry Vaughn on the adoptions. Las Cruces previously used the 2006 editions of the International Plumbing Code, International Fuel Gas Code and International Mechanical Code, all of which will be replaced by the 2012 Uniform Codes. The adoptions become effective on Jan. 1, 2013.
Kyle testified before the city council that as a result of the adoption Las Cruces now complies with state statute, which includes the UPC/UMC.
“IAPMO would like to thank the city council, staff, Local 412 and the Construction Industry Division Bureau for all of their hard work on this great achievement,” Mata said. “Adoption of the Uniform Codes works well with the industry while maintaining economic development for Las Cruces. I look forward to working with the city on this process.”
