Healdsburg, CA – The reservoirs used by the city of Healdsburg dropped to record lows after a historic drought this past summer. To conserve water, Healdsburg needed to reduce consumption by 40 percent but did not want residents’ landscaping to suffer. The city distributed 500 gallons of treated wastewater to residents each week to use for landscaping. Though it was not a long-term solution, as wastewater is expensive to haul, this program did help the city meet its water conservation goal. Now residents are replacing their lawns with more drought- tolerant landscaping to prepare for the future.
