An integral part of the useful function of any building is the safety of the water and air that move in and out of it. The dedicated members of the International Association of Plumbing and Mechanical Officials (IAPMO) have spent 85 years ensuring the safety of that water and air in our homes, schools, workplaces, restaurants and stores.
May is Building Safety Month 2011 and IAPMO is eager to share how its members are working on the front lines each and every day to ensure public health and safety within buildings across the United States and around the world — IAPMO’s mission since 1926.
As the developer and sponsor of the only plumbing, mechanical, swimming pool and solar energy codes to be designated American National Standards — the Uniform Plumbing Code® (UPC), Uniform Mechanical Code® (UMC), Uniform Swimming Pool, Spa and Hot Tub Code® (USPC) and Uniform Solar Energy Code® (USEC) — IAPMO will reaffirm its commitment to building safety this month at its annual Technical Committee Meetings, May 2-4 in St. Louis.
Gathering the most experienced and innovative minds in the plumbing and mechanical industries, these meetings will advance new code language and concepts — many in the name of increased sustainability — toward the 2012 editions of the UPC and UMC.
“The Uniform Codes are vital to building safety and IAPMO members are determined to make each new edition more comprehensive and ensure safety even better than the last,” said IAPMO President Dan Daniels. “When one considers that the provisions of the UPC protect more than half the world’s population, it’s easy to understand why IAPMO members dedicate so much of themselves to this effort.”
Daniels and IAPMO CEO GP Russ Chaney will be in Washington, D.C., later this month to participate in a press conference with U.S. Reps. Russ Carnahan (D-Mo.) and Judy Biggert (R-Ill.) celebrating High Performance Building Week, during which building safety will certainly be highlighted.
“The plumbing industry’s contribution to the construction and maintenance of a safe, healthy building tends to fly under the radar, but these individuals never waver in their diligence to ensure clean water and healthy air,” Chaney said. “Building Safety Month is a great opportunity to recognize the industry’s often unsung effort.”
