IAPMO Needs You and Your Voice at the 95th Annual Education and Business Conference in Las Vegas

One of the distinct pleasures of serving as IAPMO president is the opportunity to invite our members to attend the annual Education and Business Conference, this year back in a familiar city for this long- standing event, Las Vegas, which has hosted most recently in 2015 and 2007. This 95th installment, Sept. 22-26, will return to the Planet Hollywood Las Vegas Resort & Casino, located conveniently in the midst of all Sin City’s glitz on the Las Vegas Strip.

I’ll get to the fun bits in a moment, but I want to begin by highlighting the code development that will occur at this year’s conference. This year we have begun the process of developing the 2027 Uniform Codes and we’ll advance that work at conference with the Assembly Consideration Session. During this meeting, anybody in the assembly wishing to make a motion addressing an action of the Technical Committee and its Report on Proposals may do so. It’s an important step in IAPMO’s American National Standards Institute (ANSI)-accredited consensus development procedures and we need your voice to help continue ensuring the Uniform Codes are the best codes in the industry.

We’ll kick things off with the traditional Roscoe King Memorial Golf Tournament and our keynote speaker will be award-winning communications expert Anthony Huey.

At Monday night’s Welcome Dinner, we’ll step into the time machine and throw it back to the disco-era 1970s with a Studio 54-themed extravaganza. Come dance the night away to the Bee Gees and Donna Summer under the spinning lights of the mirror ball.

Our Wednesday outing will convey the British pub experience at Flight Club, a unique restaurant/bar at the Venetian Resort. With a life-size carousel bar and dart boards around every corner, a splendid time is guaranteed for all.

In addition to code development and ample networking opportunities, IAPMO will bring the top-notch education sessions for which its conferences have always been known. Nobody ever leaves an IAPMO conference without learning something they’ll take back for the benefit of their jurisdiction. You can count on that.

While nobody ever really needs an excuse to visit Las Vegas, I hope I’ve made it clear why you need to make plans to join us there for this year’s conference. I’ll see you there!

Steven Panelli
President at IAPMO | Website

IAPMO President Steven Panelli is chief plumbing inspector for the city and county of San Francisco. As chief plumbing inspector of a large metropolitan city, Panelli has been directly involved in the conception and framework for water conservation, storm water management, and other environmental legislation and city polices.

Born and raised in San Francisco, Panelli attended Sacred Heart High School and graduated in 1989. Two days after graduation, he was given the opportunity to work for a family friend at Heiro Plumbing. He then applied to Local 38 and completed the apprenticeship program. Shortly after becoming a journeyman, he again had the privilege to work for one of the most respected companies in San Francisco, Servadei Plumbing.

Panelli was hired in 2000 as a plumbing inspector for the city and county of San Francisco and was subsequently promoted to senior inspector in 2005 and chief plumbing inspector in 2009.

“Without the support and professionalism of my inspectors and seniors, I would not be able to be the chief I am today,” he says. “They have always had my back no matter what and I appreciate all the hard work they perform every day.”

Panelli is an apprentice instructor for the JATC of Local 38.

A contributing member of IAPMO for many years, Panelli is always willing to volunteer his time to his IAPMO chapter and has been an alternate for the plumbing and mechanical technical committees. Panelli has represented San Francisco Local 38 and the Western Pipe Trades at IAPMO’s annual conferences, as well.

“I feel very fortunate to be a part of this organization and look forward to supporting my fellow Board of Directors members, IAPMO staff, and, of course, our association members in my new role as president,” Panelli says.

Besides his dedication to the plumbing industry, Panelli enjoys playing golf, bowling, pool, bocce and sometimes a friendly game of snooker. He would never have made it to where he is without the love, support and patience of his loving wife of 29 years, Lorena. His children, Steven and Daniela, have always been two of the most important people in his life, as well. Daniela graduated from San Jose State and is pursuing a career in communications. Steven met the love of his life, Megan, and they were married this past year. Panelli is overjoyed to have a new addition to the family.
